The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? -Psalm 27:1
This week long study will take you through a series of Bible stories that highlight characters who were “outlaws,” defying norms (and sometimes even laws!) if that’s what it took to follow God and hold fast to righteousness. Along the way, we will dive deep into African American history learning about the original cowboys! Get Ready, Get Ready, Get Ready!!! We will learn the line dance, have a close out potluck pool party (RSVP only, must attend the entire week!) and enjoy daily crafts within theme!!!
Since 1838, Bethel A.M.E. Church Providence, Rhode Island has had a rich history where African American's have gathered for worship for generations. We invite communities of all cultures and ethnicities to join us in worship and in community collaboration to Renew, Rebuild, and Restore the people of God.
We encourage you to experience God in a unique way through the various ministries we are called to deliver to our neighbors and friends.
1795 is considered the official starting date of the African Freeman's Society in Rhode Island, later becoming Bethel AME Church. One of the church's founding fathers was a former slave by the name of Ichabod Northrup, a solider in the American Revolutionary War. Before having a formal place to meet, members of Bethel met in their homes and at a Quaker Meeting House on North Main Street in Providence, Rhode Island.
In 1820, a lot was purchased for the purpose of building a church home. Construction finished in 1866. It is thought that Bethel served as a final destination for escaped slaves on the Underground Railroad. In 1961, the decision was made to sell the property on Meeting Street to Brown University; money from that sale would be used to buy a new home on Rochambeau Avenue. In February of 1961, the first service was held at the new location.
Today, Bethel remains a home for those souls that are looking to find their way into the redeeming arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.
It serves over one hundred members under the teaching and guidance of Reverend Wayne S. Daley, MDiv.
Your generous donations help us continue our mission of spreading love and faith.
